This replica looks nice and very original. However, the build quality is quite cheap and definitely well below what one would expect for a $30 to $35 product. For this price one would think that it would be made out of metal. Instead it is made out of plastic. The hinges for the lid do not look or feel that sturdy so one has to be careful not to break the lid of every time it is opened. In addition, the plastic composition gives it a very cheap feel. Last but not least, one has to be very careful when removing the back to replace the battery. This is due to fact that it seems fairly easy to break when removed. Again, another build quality issue. If this product were $10 or even $15 dollars the build quality issue could be overlooked. Unfortunately, definitely not for $30. There are also not enough recorded sayings, the audio quality is quite mediocre (about quality of a Hallmark talking gift-card) and the center black piece in the ring is static. It should not have been that hard to place a cheap motor in it to at least give it some rudimentary motion. On the positive side, the product makes a decent sound when the communicator lid is opened. With a better build quality and a rotating area in the center ring this could have been a 5 star product. What a shame.

There are instructions on the web for hacking this toy into a bluetooth handset for your cell phone. Not very practical but WAY COOL!

When I was a kid the "Communicator" replicas were made solid metal and also funtioned as a two way radio that had a 1/4 mile range. This was way cool for kids to have fun play with. (A communicator that actually works! Imagine that) With todays technology, I'm sure that for a few bucks more they could make a great communicator replica that has a 5 mile range or even a real cell phone for that matter. (I would buy that!)Hey, how about a tricorder replica that is actualy a marine hand held GPS. (I'd buy that too!)End result: I'm disapointed in this product.

Trekkies looking for a nice replica of the original series' Communicator need look no further. I don't recall ever getting a good look at one of these on the 1960s TV series, but the replica for sale here certainly looks like the close-up photos of Communicators I've seen. Flip it open, and you'll hear the same sound effect used on the original Trek series. There are flashing lights and a swirling moire pattern, and numerous sound clips from the original show in what sound like grainy 16-bit fidelity. The Communicator itself is pretty large (which makes sense given that the originals on the series were roughly the same size as 1960s remote controls) and best suited for teen and adult hands. In other words, this is the perfect accessory for anyone planning on dressing like Spock on Halloween!
This could also be used as a prop in a fanfilm, although the Communicator has a rather loud internal motor connected to the swirling moire pattern. Other reviewers have commented on this. It doesn't bother me in the least as I didn't purchase the Communicator for that purpose, but you should be aware of it.
Shop around for this one - I've seen it for as little as [...] bucks. Anyone who ever built their own replica Communicator in the 1970s will want to beam this up!

... the motor that spins the moire pattern makes truly annoying (and inappropriate) sound. This device is a near-perfect aesthetic reproduction, but the noise of the motor really does detract from an otherwise winning product. You do not just hear the motor whirring inside the housing, it is actually amplified through the speaker. This is a serious design flaw.
One other gripe that is that the two buttons wobble; they don't feel precision.
With the batteries loaded (it comes with batteries already in place) I am impressed that the weight is more than I imagined from something all plastic. There's just a touch of heft to it, giving a bit more of an impression of something substantial.
The color of the antenna is perfect and looks exactly like metal mesh.
Prior to purchase, I saw a video of the communicator that showed the bottom of the antenna being warped. I understand this can happen from a too-enthusiastic flip when opening it. I am pleased to report that the device is delivered with the antenna against the main body, so any warping would indeed be due to working it a bit too aggressively.
